Breakfast 101 – Set the stage for your health! | Possible

Breakfast is not only the first meal of the day but also the most important meal of the day. Well, do you think there’s any truth to this old adage? See for yourself.

Cars need petrol, horses need hay,You need breakfast to start your day in the right way!

Benefits of having breakfast

Essentially the term breakfast means, “breaking the fast”. During the night, when we are asleep, we end up fasting for nearly 10 hours.

Thus, the first meal of the day breaks this long fast and provides the nutrients required to nourish the body and jump-start your day.

Breakfast Benefits

Research shows that eating a healthy breakfast ensures more strength and endurance to perform better in an activity. Having breakfast can also translate to a better mood because your starved brain receives glucose.

  Did you know?

Regular breakfast consumption also helps to achieve lower cholesterol levels!

Breakfast helps to boost your cognition, which means improved ability to concentrate and perform. This is essential for children as it helps them score better grades. Children also have the benefit of better problem-solving skills and eye-hand coordination when they have breakfast every day.

Don’t forget breakfast is an essential part of a healthy meal plan, which ensures optimal growth and development in children.

Health risks involved in skipping breakfast

Many studies have shown that people who skip breakfast are more likely to find it hard to concentrate throughout the day, get emotionally upset, and probably have a shorter lifespan than those who eat a healthy breakfast every day.

In the case of children, they may have poor school attendance, poor memory power, and lower grades. Some research points out that eating breakfast reduces the incidence of cardiovascular diseases.

However, breakfast skippers have a heightened risk of developing diabetes and high blood pressure (hypertension).

Breakfast and weight management

Many weight watchers tend to skip their breakfast hoping to lose weight, but this is not true. As a matter of fact, skipping breakfast can lead to weight gain.

Breakfast kick-starts the body’s metabolism after a long period of fasting (when we are asleep).

Skipping breakfast means the body remains in a notion that it is fasting and turns on the survival mode, this means that any carbohydrate intake (later in the day) results in storage as fat, a source of energy that can be used later.

Moreover, hunger sets in long before it’s time for lunch when you skip breakfast. But because it’s not convenient to eat properly many people end up snacking on foods that are high in fat and sugar which can lead to weight gain.

So remember, eat a healthy, balanced breakfast every day!
