Curbing Your Food Cravings

Hi Saachi!

First off, I just want to say that I completely understand what you are going through. It’s completely normal to crave for something which is out of your diet and you are more likely to overeat it when you do encounter it. Restricting your diet primes you to obsess and it becomes frustrating when our body does not crave for healthy eats such as carrots with the same intensity as it does a not-so-healthy-treat- like chocolate.

But take heart: You are not at their mercy. All you need to do is learn why cravings happen and you can easily outsmart them.

One of the main reasons we give in to temptation is because of visual cues such as seeing enticing foods which are major triggers. Smells are potent too.

But, you can easily curb your cravings without feeling deprived. To keep cravings in check, schedule a specific time to enjoy a reasonable portion of your favorite treat.

Learn to take your mind off the food and focus on something else. Cravings last for about 10 minutes so if it dies down after a while, it works well. Cravings also happen when your blood sugar is low and you are tired and hungry.

If you are truly hungry, choose a healthy, filling snack to raise your blood sugar to normal levels. Quit fighting with yourself over food and you might banish those cravings for good. Remember, moderation is the key.
