World Water Day is observed annually to emphasize the importance and conservation of freshwater.
As the name suggests, it is celebrated around the world with people conducting and propagating the importance of freshwater and its sustainable management by participating in a variety of events like drama, music, educational or just related to nature.
World Water had been designated by the United Nations back in 1993 and since then, it has gained popularity and awareness over the years.
Every year, UN-Water selects a theme for World Water Day and this year, the theme is “Nature for Water” aimed at encouraging people to look for answers in nature [1].
This means devising natural methods and solutions for issues like drought, floods, water pollution, etc.
The Idea Behind World Water Day
The idea of the event is to motivate people to gain awareness about the rising depletion of the most valuable natural resource – water and the problems around it.
It is a known fact that global water crisis is one of the major issues that require immediate attention and action. Water Scarcity, water pollution, and other sanitation-related issues.
Damaged ecosystems affect the quantity and quality of water available for human consumption. Today, 2.1 billion people live without safe drinking water at home that majorly affects their health, education and livelihoods.
Sustainable Development Goal 6 commits the world to ensure that everyone has access to safe water by 2030, and includes targets for protecting the natural environment and reducing pollution.
